Ingredients
Scale
Base Ingredients
- 4 cups filtered water
- 1/2 cup dried hibiscus flowers
- 1 cup fresh lemon juice (from approximately 4–6 lemons)
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup natural sweetener (such as agave syrup (natural) or maple syrup (natural)), adjust to taste
Optional Ingredients
- 1–2 tablespoons natural gelling agent (if a thicker texture or jelly variation is desired)
- Fresh mint leaves (for infusion or garnish)
- Thin slices of fresh ginger (for infusion)
- Pureed berries or mango (for fruity variation)
- Carbonated water or grape juice (to replace filtered water for sparkling version)
Garnishes
- Fresh lemon slices
- Sprigs of fresh mint
- Edible flowers
Instructions
- Steep the Hibiscus: Place the dried hibiscus flowers in a heatproof pitcher or bowl. Pour 4 cups of boiling filtered water over the flowers and allow them to steep for 15 minutes. This releases the deep ruby color and tart flavor into the water.
- Strain the Hibiscus Infusion: Using a fine-mesh strainer, remove the hibiscus flowers from the liquid. The vibrant red tea remaining will serve as the base for the lemonade.
- Add Lemon Juice and Sweetener: While the hibiscus tea is still warm, squeeze in the fresh lemon juice. Stir in the chosen natural sweetener until fully dissolved, adjusting the sweetness level to taste. If using, add the natural gelling agent now and mix thoroughly to ensure smooth consistency.
- Chill and Serve: Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until cold. Serve the Hibiscus Lemonade over ice, garnished with lemon slices, mint sprigs, or edible flowers for an enhanced sensory experience.
Notes
- Use fresh lemons and high-quality dried hibiscus flowers for best flavor and vibrant color.
- Adjust the steeping time to control the strength of the hibiscus flavor.
- Experiment with different natural sweeteners such as agave syrup (natural), maple syrup (natural), or coconut sugar (natural) to find your preferred sweetness.
- Serve the lemonade well chilled or over plenty of ice for maximum refreshment.
- If using the natural gelling agent, ensure it is fully dissolved for a smooth texture.
- Store leftover lemonade in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Stir before serving due to possible sediment settling.
- Freeze hibiscus tea base in ice cube trays to keep on hand for quick preparation or chilling drinks without dilution.
- Warm the lemonade gently on low heat if you prefer a warm drink, avoiding boiling to preserve fresh flavors.
